Rentrant victorieux de France, le roi Jean veut se faire couronner à nouveau, au grand dam des Lords de sa cour.

 

Salisbury. To be possess’d with double pomp,

To guard a title that was rich before,

To gild refined gold, to paint the lily,

To throw a perfume on the violet,

To smooth the ice, or add another hue

Unto the rainbow, or with taper-light

To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish,

Is wasteful, and ridiculous excess.

 

SALISBURY. – Redoubler la pompe qu’on a déjà,

Renforcer un titre qui était brillant,

Redorer l’or qui a été raffiné, repeindre le lis,

Projeter du parfum sur la violette,

Polir la glace, ou ajouter une couleur

À l’arc-en-ciel, ou illuminer

L’œil magnifique du ciel pour tenter de l’embellir,

C’est un débordement de gâchis ridicule.
